Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.

Note 9 at Phil. 2:30: Paul states that Epaphroditus' sickness was a direct result of the way he had neglected himself in his effort to serve Paul. Apparently, Epaphroditus had depleted his own strength in his service to Paul to the point that he succumbed to some type of sickness.
